Certified Nurse Aide Program

Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Program

What is a Certified Nurse Aide?

Certified Nurse Aides (CNA) are typically responsible for the general care of their patients. Duties will vary, depending on the specific needs of the patient. The most common responsibilities are taking and recording vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure; assisting them to and from their bed or chair as needed, and helping them with feeding and personal hygiene. CNAs may also assist doctors or nurses during medical procedures.

CNAs often work in a wide variety of settings; nursing homes, hospitals, adult daycare centers, personal homes and assisted living facilities all require nursing assistants to act as a helpful liaison between the RN or LPN and the patient.

Course Description

The Certified Nurse Aide training program is designed to prepare individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to become a Certified Nurse Aide, the first step to a career in the medical field. Upon successful completion of the course, the graduate will be qualified to be placed on the State Certified Nurse Aide Registry.

Course topics include, but are not limited to:

  • giving basic nursing and personal care to patients
  • helping patients maintain or regain everyday tasks including eating, bathing, dressing, and toileting
  • communicating with patients and providing physical (includes heavy lifting) and emotional support to them
  • making patient observations and reporting them
  • participating in care planning

Please note: Students must have reliable transportation to clinical sites assigned by the instructor. Clinical dates are assigned based off of the site availability. Request are taken, but not always granted.

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course, the graduate’s name will be placed on the State Certified Nurse Aide Registry. This is a CT state certification. Students who plan on moving can still take this program, but need to go through the Prometric site to transfer their license to a different state.

Any person who has successfully completed a DPH-approved nurse assistant training program (CNA) (has the skills) meets the training requirements necessary to take the homemaker-home health aide competency evaluation and be certified as Home Health Aide. Licensed home health agencies can administer this evaluation. Visit https://www.elicense.ct.gov/Lookup/LicenseLookup.aspx to find a list of licensed agencies.

COVID-19 vaccine for students at clinical sites

Students who have internships (at hospitals, medical centers, clinics, etc.) connected to their academic studies at a CSCU institution, and who do not want to get the COVID-19 vaccine due to medical or non-medical reasons, should apply for an exemption at that organization/site.  CSCU can only grant and control medical and non-medical exemptions on the college campus-not outside it.   We understand that some clinical/allied health sites may not allow for any exemptions, and if this is the case, we should work with the student to find an alternate suitable site.  If this cannot be accomplished, the student should be advised of this and may need to reevaluate their decision to not get the vaccine.

Required Supplies

Students are required to provide:

  • Navy Blue Scrubs
  • Closed Toe Shoes
