What is a Security Officer?
Are you interested in a career or part-time work in which you impact hundreds or thousands of people every day? Being a security officer might be for you. A security officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment. Job duties include securing premises and personnel by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; inspecting buildings, equipment, and access points; and permitting entry.
Course Description
Security Officer Training is a state-required, eight (8) hour course that is needed to be employed as a security officer. The student will learn about the following:
- Brief history of security
- Basic criminal justice
- Basic first aide
- Use of force
- Search and seizure
- Public safety/emergency response
- General security officer duties
Certification
Students will be required to complete an exam with a 70% or better as a passing score. The course will be taught by a State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection approved instructor. Students will be advised on how to apply for the Security Officer Identification Card.
Prerequisites
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Provide proof of high school completion or equivalent (foreign students must provide a notarized English-translated transcript)
- Connecticut state law states that no one shall be approved for a security officer license who has been convicted of a felony, any sexual offense, or any crime involving honesty or integrity

Glenn has a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice with membership in three professional associations. He holds over ten instructor certifications. He worked for a year and a half as a Private Investigator and has twenty- six years in private security. His positions have ranged from entry level to his current position as Area Manager of Training and Development.
