Central Sterile Processing Technician Program

Central Sterile Processing Technician Program

What is a Central Sterile Processing Technician?

Central Sterile Processing Technician ClassCentral Sterile Processing Technicians (CSPT) are responsible for packaging surgical instruments in hospitals, medical offices, surgical centers, and clinics. CSPTs are highly needed healthcare professionals who improve the quality of patient care by minimizing infection rates. Job responsibilities include organizing and assembling instrument trays, sterilizing supplies; operating sterilization equipment including sterilizers, aerators, and washers; and maintaining records and inventory.

Course Description

This program includes 60 hours of classroom time covering decontamination and sterilization processing, anatomy and physiology, microbiology infection control, and identification of surgical instruments. Students will also be required to complete 20 hours of clinical internship experience at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, Backus, Windham Hospital, or Westerly Hospital. Internships are scheduled with the instructor while in the program.

Please note: Students must have reliable transportation to clinical sites assigned by the instructor. Clinical dates are assigned based off of the site availability. Request are taken, but not always granted.

  3. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds and stand for long periods of time
  4. Clean criminal background. A criminal background check may be performed. Students who have a criminal record are denied access to clinical internship sites.

  6. COVID-19 Vaccination including booster required

COVID-19 vaccine for students at clinical sites

Central Sterile Processing Technician ClassStudents who have internships (at hospitals, medical centers, clinics, etc.) connected to their academic studies at a CSCU institution, and who do not want to get the COVID-19 vaccine due to medical or non-medical reasons, should apply for an exemption at that organization/site.  CSCU can only grant and control medical and non-medical exemptions on the college campus-not outside it.   We understand that some clinical/allied health sites may not allow for any exemptions, and if this is the case, we should work with the student to find an alternate suitable site.  If this cannot be accomplished, the student should be advised of this and may need to reevaluate their decision to not get the vaccine.

Certification

Upon completion, students are eligible to take the certification exam through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution Inc. (CBSPD). (National Certification) Certification is mandatory for employment.
