Sandra Jeknavorian: Hopes for the Past, Memories of the Future

Monday, October 8 – Friday, November 23, 2018

Opening Reception on Friday, October 12 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

A series of drawings done in pastels and charcoal on Stonehenge paper, these works are inspired by life and death and the dualism of the body and the soul. René Descartes believed that the soul is the source of all intelligence and emotion while the body is merely a repository for the supreme workings of the soul, just “a machine that bleeds.” The temporary nature of the mortal body and the ethereal nature of the soul is explored in the context of life and death. Mystery, as well as perceptions of time and memory are also examined in this series of drawings.

Sandra Jeknavorian was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She attended Hartford Art School where she obtained her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting. She obtained her Master of Fine Arts Degree in Painting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Sandra is a professor of Art and the Program Coordinator of Visual Fine Arts at Three Rivers Community College. Sandra Jeknavorian is a visual artist and has exhibited her work and curated shows throughout the East Coast, notably at Studio Soto in Boston, Massachusetts, and the D.C. Arts Center in Washington, D.C. Two of her paintings are part of the collection of the United States Federal Government, Department of the State and are installed at the United States Embassy in Yerevan, Armenia.

Makerspace

Innovative Pop-Up Makerspace

Wednesday, September 4 – Friday, September 28, 2018.
Opening reception on Wednesday, September 4 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

A pop-up makerspace has taken over The Gallery at Three Rivers for the month of September. The makerspace, which was installed in the last weeks of August, holds fifty pounds of white Legos, two-thousand KEVA Planks, and a visual arts station for innovation. The intent of the makerspace is to promote active learning, team building, and multidisciplinary approaches to inquiry and creating. Faculty have been invited and encouraged to hold classes in the space and adapt the materials and hands-on learning into their curricula.

Students are can use the space outside of class Monday through Thursday from 12:30-1:30 pm, and the public is invited to several guest-speaker sessions. On Thursday, September 6 at 12:30 pm, Kem Barfield will give a “Google Tilt Brush Presentation.” On Wednesday, September 12 at 6:00 pm, Casey Moran and John Curran, both involved in New London’s makerspace, will present “Building Makerspaces in your Community;” and Family Night will be held on Wednesday, September 19 from 5:00-7:00 pm for the community to visit and create with their families.

Afarin Rahmanifar: Women of Shahnameh

Thursday, June 14 – Wednesday, June 27, 2018.
Opening reception on Thursday, June 14 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

“Rahmanifar’s work is inextricably bound to her experience living in exile from Tehran, the city where she grew up, in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution. The necessity of having to acquiesce to a new culture, therefore adjusting her own identity, provides the foundation for the tension and chromatic energy in her work. Her subject matter combines references from her upbringing – the story Shahrazad and the poetry of Shahnameh, with images of Barbie – from the second stage of her life as an American mother to a little girl. Likewise her painting style draws on her early training in miniature painting, while also using the tools of abstraction, afforded to her in her later education.” Notes from her 2017 exhibit at the SOHO20 Gallery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
