Peaceful protestJoin us for the second evening of the two-part forum, Is Hatred and Violence the New Norm in American Society? focusing on a discussion about Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Immigration and the American Dream.

Both parts of the forum will be held at Three Rivers Community College. Part one will be held on Tuesday, September 26 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose room; part two will be on Wednesday, September 27 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in room B-127. The forums address different aspects of the topic and can be attended independently or together.

Both forums will address the issues of hate and violence in America today, including protests at Charlottesville, anti-Semitism, and the threats against the LGBTQ and immigrant communities. Are these issues simply the result of Confederate statues or are they consequences of racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and anti-immigration sentiments? Confederate statues, Confederate flags, and swastikas represent prejudice, discrimination, and exclusion for many Americans, yet for some they are simply cultural symbols and metaphors. How can these differences be resolved? A key step is through discussion, which is why these forums are being held.

On Tuesday, the discussion will center on Understanding the Cultural Symbolism of Charlottesville, Virginia and panelists will include Department Chair of Mathematics and Science and Associate Professor Roxanne Tisch, and Three Rivers students Megan Ory and Bridney Casillas. Edward A. Derr, Student Diversity and Title IX Coordinator and Student Success and Leadership Program Coordinator, will moderate the forum.

On Wednesday, the conversation continues, focusing on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Immigration and the American Dream. Edward A. Derr will again moderate with panelists including Professor of Economics and Political Science Philip Mayer Jr. and Three Rivers students Megan Ory and Bridney Casillas.

Is Hatred and Violence the New Norm in American Society? will take place on Tuesday, September 26 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose room and on Wednesday, September 27 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in room B-127. It is free and open to the public. The forums can be attended independently or together. For more information about this event, please call 860-215-9255 or email EDerr@threerivers.edu
