InFusion is a literary/performing art series that blends the creative works of literature and various artistic mediums, such as the visual and musical arts. The annual reading/performance features a distinguished artist from each genre and opens with a social from 7:00-7:30 p.m. Each artist then performs for half an hour, and the evening concludes with a question and answer period from 8:30-9:00 p.m.

Rhonda Ward is the inaugural Poet Laureate of New London, Connecticut. Her works have been featured in the journals: Beginnings MagazineBurning WordLong Island QuarterlyPoetry Bay, Siren and Temper Review. She has performed at various venues including: Art’s Cafe Mystic, University of Connecticut, Bowery Poetry Club, the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, and in England at the International Women’s Arts in Kendal, Cumbria. She currently lives and writes in New London.

Kate Rushin is the author of The Black Back-Ups. Her “The Bridge Poem” appears in This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, a ground-breaking feminist anthology edited by Cherríe Moraga and Gloria E. Anzaldúa. A recipient of the Rose Low Rome Memorial Poetry Prize and the Grolier Poetry Prize, her work is widely anthologized and has been published in such journals as Callaloo. Kate received her B.A. from Oberlin College and her M.F.A. from Brown University. She is a former Fellow of The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and a graduate fellow of Cave Canem Foundation.

A top bassist in jazz, Nat Reeves’ supportive and stimulating playing has uplifted countless numbers of sessions and recording dates, most notably with the great altoists Jackie McLean and Kenny Garrett. He has led his own CD State of Emergency. As both a performer and an educator, he has made a strong impact on the jazz world. After teaching part-time for years, in 2001, Nat began a full-time teaching career at The Hartt School, the comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford. He reflects, “I often teach what I want to learn. I love helping the students. I think of teaching similar to playing a gig: being well organized, accomplishing goals and solving problems. It is a lot of fun and it makes me a better musician.”

InFusion will be held Friday, May 11 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Expressiones Cultural Center, located at 84 Bank St., New London, Connecticut. It is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Frederick-Douglass Knowles II at 860-222-5524.
