Join us for the 3rd Annual InFusion: Where Literary & Oral Tradition Traverse, featuring: poet Jose Gonzalez and spoken word poet Iyaba Ibo Mandingo at Expressiones Cultural Center in New London on April 21, 2017, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. This free event is presented by Three Rivers Community College Community Involvement & Support Committee, Three Rivers College Foundation and Expressiones Cultural Center.

InFusion is a literary and performing art series that combines the creative works of literature and spoken word poetry. It is held each April in honor of National Poetry Month. The annual reading/performance features a distinguished artist from each genre in the same evening, and opens with a social from 7:00 – 7:30 p.m. Each artist then performs for half an hour, and the evening concludes with a question and answer period from 8:30 – 9:00 p.m.

Poet and literary artist Jose B. Gonzalez is the author of an International Book Award Finalist, “Toys Made of Rock,” based on his life growing up in El Salvador and New London. He has been featured at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian and international book festivals, and has had his work anthologized in the Norton Introduction to Literature, “Theatre Under My Skin: Contemporary Salvadoran Poetry,” and “The Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States.” He has also been the recipient of the New England Teachers of English Poet of the Year Award and the Latino de Oro Culture and Arts Award.

Iyaba Ibo Mandingo, the featured spoken word poet, is a painter, poet, writer, actor and playwright. A native of Antigua, West Indies, he came to the United States in 1980 as a young boy. Iyaba studied fine arts at Southern Connecticut State University and today teaches in and around the tri-state area as a Master Teaching Artist. Iyaba has appeared regularly as a performance poet in venues across the United States and abroad, including Nuyorican Poetry Café, Brooklyn Moon, and Next Door Café among others in the NY area and was the keynote performer at the 2011 Westchester, NY Poetry Festival. In 2015, he embarked on his first African tour, bringing his one-man play, “unframed;” his first novel, “Sins of My Fathers;” and his poetry to South Africa and Nigeria.

InFusion will be held Friday, April 21 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Expressiones Cultural Center, located at 84 Bank St., New London, Connecticut. It is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Frederick-Douglass Knowles II at 860-222-5524.
